FORD Files Patent Application for Roof Mounted Airbags! Ford to Announce new E-SUV?
Ford has filed a patent application for their new added cabin protection system, which is, the roof mounted airbags system.
This will have airbags deployed from the headliner and surrounds occupants for added crash protection. This innovation seems most importance in accidents involving toppling of the car (rolling) or falling from heights such as bridges which will maybe way less frequent than the previous posibility. But the curiosity is, will Ford use it in their own vehicles currently in market or will they market it with TOT with other automobiles. It may be the case that they are bringing new vehicle in their lineup or maybe they are designing a new platform for EVs which would need roof protection. According to its positioning its most probably for a premium hatchback or crossover or compact suv. The hatchback has a very little chance because this segment has a very tight price point which makes us doubt the possibility of getting a very new technology there. So the guesses are that we might see it in a new EV compact suv or mpv.
The reason for the least chances for the current compact suv lineup is the ride height which doesn't match up with the requirement of the roof protection, rather it needs more stronger C-pillars. And one more point where the EVs seems better chances is, the weight distribution in EVs.
Let's see in which segment Ford introduces it.
